ART HISTORY TRIP SCHOLARSHIPS AVAIBLE NOW Contact: Melanie Nicholas, Public Information Officer, 552-2806
The National Education Association has awarded a $5,000 grant to the University of Texas of the Permian Basin to help students defray the costs of this summer’s art history trip to Spain. Ten UTPB students will receive scholarships of $500 each.
There are a few requirements that students must meet to be eligible for the scholarship. First, students must commit to going on the trip prior to receiving the award by depositing $500. Second, students must take the class (ARTS 3601 - six credit hours) during Maymester & Beyond. Third, the student must apply through an informal application that will be due Jan. 14, 2008. Fourth, the student must be majoring or minoring in a Spanish-related program. There are also some scholarships available for art majors/minors and the qualifications are the same.
The trip is also open to members of the public who enroll in the class but are not full-time students. Cost for the trip is approximately $3,000, which includes travel, accommodations, excursions, activities and breakfasts. The class will visit Barcelona, Madrid, Segovia and more. There will be a guided tour of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, housing what was once one of the world’s most extensive and valuable privately owned collections of paintings, rivaled only by the legendary holdings of Queen Elizabeth II. The collection is housed in the 18th-century Villahermosa Palace, and features a collection of European paintings from the 13th through the 20th century, including works by El Greco, Velázquez, Dürer, Rembrandt, Canaletto, Caravaggio, Hals and Goya. The departure date is set for May 31. For more information regarding the trip to Spain, go to www.utpb.edu and click on the “Trip to Spain” link or contact Marianne Berger Woods at 552-2290 or
