Growth is good where there’s plenty of room for expansion

A h, progress. One person's buzzword is another's curse word. Naturally, this all depends on your outlook and location.

For instance, folks in urban areas such as Dallas, Austin and Houston see rapid growth as just another problem to deal with. The addition of subdivisions and large business complexes just adds to the burden of expanding utility services, dealing with troublesome traffic and, in some cases, destruction of works of nature.

Hearst Award
Technology UTPB professor, students, seek transportation fuel of future

Today's headlines are filled with discussion of the search for cleaner, renewable fuels to power the nation's transportation system.

It's a topic that captured the attention of Dr. Mike Robinson, the Ellen and Bill Noel Distinguished Professor for Energy Research and the Chemistry Chair at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, back in the 1980s. He challenged his students to address those issues; when none stepped forward, he decided to follow up with his own ideas. The move led him to change his research from synthesizing anti-cancer drugs to synthesizing transportation fuels. Over a decade later, he has received several patents and has several patents pending for his research into biofuels and last year received a two-year grant from Chevron Technology Ventures. For his efforts, he has earned the Hearst Energy Award for Technology.

Convocation
UTPB honors students, faculty

Several hundred students as well as faculty were honored during UT Permian Basin's annual Honors Convocation ceremony Tuesday.

The event recognizes scholarship award winners as well as students excelling in their fields of study.

Among those honored was Midland's Michele Struble. Struble, who is student teaching at Emerson Elementary, was named the Outstanding Student in Education Grades 4-8.
